Story
Our employer is the Unified Government of Wyandotte County. They provide Wyandotte County with human and environmental services.
The Problem
Shelters that already exist are not open all day and don’t focus a lot on helping unhoused people succeed.
The Solution
Our solution is to create a homeless shelter called the JAE Opportunity Center which is open all day and has rooms assigned to people who are homeless. Our idea helps with the needs because we will provide each person with a stable room, clothes, food, and transportation with translators to those who don’t speak English. It also supports their needs because the shelter would provide entertainment and educational programs that can teach people important life skills.
Target Market
The main people affected by the problem are unhoused people because they don’t have the resources.
Societal Impact
We wouldn’t have as many unhoused people suffering on the streets and people who are homeless would have somewhere to stay. People would also get help to where they can possibly leave the shelter and start living independently in their own home.
Next Steps
The next step is to ask the Unified Government if they could provide us with an abandoned building they own and to fund our first building. After that we would be able to apply for other organizational funding/grants to expand our idea to more buildings.
Reflection
This work has impacted us by showing us how hard it is for unhoused people to live when homeless shelters don’t provide what we thought they did. Skills we have built are empathy, creative thinking, and problem solving.
Use of Backer Contributions
We are not currently accepting contributions from our voters. This pitch is part of the ProX competition for $5,000. If people support our idea with funding, then we would allocate money to each category of our first building. For example bills, workers' salary, hygiene products, furniture, technology, and human needs.
